A few years ago, I took on a major home renovation on the Northern Beaches. Like most homeowners, I did what everyone tells you to do—I got a few quotes, checked a few reviews, and picked the drainage plumber who seemed the most convincing.

Convincing isn't the same as capable. The scope of work changed. Costs blew out. Eventually it ended up in an NCAT dispute. I lost time, money, and a fair amount of peace of mind—because I simply didn't have the expert knowledge to know better, and neither did the platform I found him on.

What made it worse was realising, later, that there were brilliant, honest tradies right around the corner who could have done the job properly.
